PUBLIC AFFAIRS

DPSA The government has put aside 5% to 6% in its budget for wage increases in 2012 and offered the unions representing 1.3 million public sector workers a 5% increase. NEHAWU has stated that labour conflict cannot be ruled out.

MINING MATTERS

MODIKWA MINE AND NUM Strike action involving 3 000 workers which commenced on 16 March is continuing. The union is demanding a 12% increase against the employer's offer of between 8.75% to 9.5%.

SAMANCOR CHROME AND NUM The four week strike by 3 500 workers which commenced on 27 February has ended. A task team has been set up to address equalisation of wages across chrome mines and smelters.

IMPALA PLATINUM AND NUM Production resumed at the mine's operations on 6 March following the six week strike which commenced on 20 January and resulted in the dismissal of 17 200 workers and the rehiring of only 15 000 due to economic constraints.

INDUSTRIAL ACTION MONITOR

A nationwide strike organised by COSATU calling for a total ban against labour brokers and the removal of tollgates on Gauteng freeways took place on 7 March. It is estimated that 100 000 workers took part in protest marches in the nine provinces.

BUS STOP!

BOMBELLA CONCESSION The 320 Gautrain bus drivers on strike for the second time this year have been dismissed. Their demands centred around transport to and from work. Cosatu has since pledged its support for the non unionised drivers.

OFF THE RAILS!

ASA (METRORAIL) AND SATAWU The week long strike by 6 000 rail workers which commenced on 27 February ended following an interdict declaring it illegal. PRASA and its CEO are now suing the union for defamation following allegations of corruption.
