Recently, an employee at a hearing for unauthorised absence explained his misconduct by claiming that he was on the way to work when he was kidnapped by aliens.
This is a development on the belief that employees have, that whatever they offer as an excuse, the employer has to prove it is not true – and smugly this rocket scientist took comfort in the thought that the employer could never prove that this was not true.
What he missed of course is that it is about balance of probability as opposed to absolute proof. He lost his job, and it is now rumoured that he works for aliens on the planet Zog.
